Squid Game creator says season 2 is shaping up to be better than expected

Squid Game, season 2, Netflix

Squid Game quickly became Netflix’s most-watched series of all time. While creator Hwang Dong-hyuk initially didn’t have any plans for another season, the extreme popularity of the series meant that it pretty much had to happen. “There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season,” Hwang said last year. “So I almost feel like you leave us no choice. But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen.” Netflix finally officially announced Squid Game season 2 last month and Hwang Dong-hyuk gave an update to E! News.

I have a set outline,” Hwang Dong-hyuk teased about Squid Game season 2. “I have a treatment of a whole season two episode with new games and new characters. I like it. I think it’s good. It’s better than what I expected.” Capturing that lightning in a bottle is almost an impossible task, but I can’t wait to see what the new season will bring. The first season of the South Korean Netflix drama revolved around a group of indebted individuals invited to play a series of children’s games for the chance at a life-changing cash prize. However, those involved soon discover that the games are exceptionally deadly, forcing the players to split into teams to survive the games’ physical and psychological twists.

Squid Game recently received 14 nominations for the Primetime Emmy Awards, including one for Best Drama. This makes it the first non-English show to be nominated in that category. Hwang Dong-hyuk hopes Squid Game‘s popularity has proven that audiences are hungry for stories from across the globe. “We are moving away from the old days of the U.S. exporting content abroad and the global audiences enjoying U.S. content only,” he said. “The global content is now being appreciated and enjoyed in the U.S. market, as well. This is a really grand moment.” In addition to season 2, Hwang has also said that a third season of Squid Game is also a possibility.
