WARNING: THIS STORY MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR SEASON ONE OF SQUID GAME. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK IF YOU HAVEN’T HAD A CHANCE TO CHECK OUT THE SERIES.
While Netflix hasn’t handed out an official renewal to their international hit Squid Game, series writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed during an event in Los Angeles honoring the show’s first season that season two is currently in the planning process.
Hwang did admit that it’s still too early to say when the season will be produced but the fact that a second season is in the cards should fans of the series pretty happy. Hyuk said, “There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice. But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen.” You can check out the Twitter post from AP Entertainment that has Hwang on video confirming the news below!
Along with confirming that a second season is in the works, Hwang also confirmed that Seong Gi-hun, the protagonist of the first season played by Lee Jung-jae, will also be making a return appearance in season two. Hwang said, “I will promise you this, Gi-hun will come back. He will do something for the world.”
Squid Game, which is officially Netflix’s biggest debut with 111 million views in its first month, is already set to create nearly $900 million in value for the streamer. The show has become a massive hit on the platform so I’m sure they’re game to keep the series around for a second season.
Squid Game tells the story of a group of 456 people who are invited to risk their lives in a mysterious survival with a U.S. $38.7 million prize. The nine-episode series stars Lee Jung-Jae, Park Hae-soo, and Wi Ha-joon.
