If you’re an elementary school student in New York and were prepping your tracksuit and slip-on vans to sport your Squid Game costume for Halloween, you may want to hit the pause button on that. Three elementary schools located near Syracuse, New York, have decided to ban Squid Game costumes featured in the popular, but ultra-violent, Netflix series.
The principals at the schools have decided to do this because they believe that the costumes send a message of violence to impressionable students. They also call out “the potential violent message aligned with the costume.” The story began to make traction, per “TMZ“, when parents from three schools received an email that stated the following:
“We have observed some students at recess have been playing a version of [Squid Games] … which is intended for mature audiences ages 16 and older. Due to concerns about the potential violent nature of the game, it is inappropriate for recess play or discussion at school.”
Craig Tice, the Superintendent of the school district, told the Washington Post that, “Because of this activity our principals wanted to make sure our families are aware that it would be inappropriate for any student to wear to school a Halloween costume from this show.” The whole thing is pretty ironic considering Squid Game showcases adult players playing children’s games but I can get why you wouldn’t want children imitating this at school since tug of war and red light/green light typically don’t end in a bloodbath as it does on the series.
Squid Game tells the story of a group of 456 people who are invited to risk their lives in a mysterious survival with a U.S. $38.7 million prize. The nine-episode series stars Lee Jung-Jae, Park Hae-soo, and Wi Ha-joon.
