Spock will spend most of his screen time with Dr. McCoy in Star Trek Beyond

Part of what makes The Original Series of Star Trek so enduring is the powerful friendship between Captain Kirk, Dr. McCoy, and Mr. Spock. The trio held great love for one another but that never stood in the way of some playful bickering, particularly from Dr. McCoy and Mr. Spock, which is something we haven't had much of  in J.J. Abrams rebooted STAR TREK series. The new film series has focused primarily on Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and Mr. Spock (Zachary Quinto), which is obviously understandable as they have always been the stars of the franchise, but those of us who felt that Dr. McCoy (Karl Urban) has gotten the short end of the stick in the past two films will be pleased to know that he may have a much bigger presence in STAR TREK BEYOND.

Speaking with The Telegraph while promoting HITMAN: AGENT 17, Zachary Quinto dropped several details about the new Star Trek film, namely that he won't be spending as many scenes with Chris Pine this time around, but in fact will share the majority of his screen time with Karl Urban. "Those characters are so diametrically opposed that it’ll be nice to see them interacting," said Quinto. As a big fan of Dr. McCoy and Karl Urban's portrayal of him, this is wonderful news and about damn time.

Justin Lin stepped up to the plate to direct STAR TREK BEYOND when J.J. Abrams jumped ship to that other Star franchise and Zachary Quinto spoke with MTV News to comment on the different on-set atmosphere that a new director brings:

Invariably there’s going to be a different vibe when you remove someone as gregarious and outgoing and talented as J.J., but Justin has come in with this really interesting and confident energy that’s a little bit more reserved and a little bit quieter, but also very powerful and really sure-handed. He knows exactly what he wants this movie to look like and that’s really exciting.

Quinto also praised Simon Pegg's new behind-the-scenes role in STAR TREK BEYOND; in addition to reprising his role of Scotty, Pegg also co-wrote the script with Doug Jung.

It’s been incredible to have Simon be so integrally involved in the story because he knows us all so well and he knows our characters all so well, we don’t have to walk very far if we have any questions or concerns about stuff in the script!

STAR TREK BEYOND is set for a July 8, 2016 release.
