It was only a couple of days ago that I had posted that Guillermo Del Toro was producing a new monster flick called SPLICE, with Adrien Brody set to star. Now today, a review of the script, written by director Vincenzo Natali, Antoinette Tayler and Doug Taylor has surfaced. Let me say, this review is a little more than promising.
…it’s fantasy science – you know, “science fiction”. On UK TV only just this week Heroes, Dexter and CSI have all tossed around bad science like it makes sense and expected the audience to swallow it but in Splice, that’s not the deal at all. This is sensible science, however stretched, and comfortably embedded in a smart narrative before being exploited for all of it’s allegorical, social, metaphorical and psychological worth. Splice doesn’t pretend to know everything about science while knowing nothing.
Personally, I now look forward to Splice even more than I did before reading the script. It’s not going to be a huge film, but it is going to be beloved.
I don’t want to give away anything but if you’re interested in reading the review, and don’t mind a couple of spoilers (minor spoilers I must add), then go here.
The film is about 2 scientists who, by breaking all ethical and governmental laws, create a hybrid creature that turns into a beautiful, yet dangerous human-chimera like thing. The film will be directed by Vincenzo Natali (The Cube) and produced by Guillermo Del Toro.
