Who's pumped for Steven Spielberg's remake of WEST SIDE STORY?! I can't hear you! I said, who is pumped for… I'm just kidding and please forgive me for my overzealous (slightly sarcastic) opening. While Spielberg is clearly one of our greatest filmmakers ever, his "rematch" between the Jets and the Sharks isn't very high on my must-see radar. But for everyone else chomping at the bit for news regarding this musical opus redo, cast your eyes above for the first official image of "Anita" played by Ariana DeBose!
In addtion to DeBose, the rest of the cast includes Ansel Elgort as Tony, Rachel Zegler as Maria, David Alvarez as Bernardo, Josh Andrés Rivera as Chino, Mike Faist as Riff, Ana Isabelle as Rosalia, Corey Stoll as Police Lieutenant Schrank, Brian d'Arcy James as Police Sergeant Krupke, and Rita Moreno (the original "Anita"!) as Valentina.
And for the uninitiated, the plots goes like this: A spin on the William Shakespeare play “Romeo and Juliet”, the original 1957 Broadway musical “West Side Story” from writer Arthur Laurents (music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim) found Tony from the white Jets and Maria from the Puerto Rican Sharks falling in love – resulting in some inevitable drama.
WEST SIDE STORY Spielberg-Style dances its way into theaters on December 18, 2020.
