No matter what happens over the course of AVENGERS: ENDGAME, we for sure know we will see Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) again this summer’s SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME. This time around the web-slinger is going international, taking a school field trip to Europe and soon learning that trouble will always find him, no matter what time zone. Director Jon Watts and Holland recently spoke about how this journey will continue to shape the young hero, and a new image finds Peter shaking hands with the handsome man in the dope suit, Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal.
EW caught up with Watts and Holland on the set of FAR FROM HOME, and the former talked about how this is not just a fun trip for Parker, wherein he gets to punch random bad guys in between crêpes. It’s all about expanding the challenges the wall-crawler faces, putting him in position to accept the fact it’s time to start growing up and becoming both an adult and a hero.
“Peter’s ready for a vacation at the beginning of this movie, to say the least. This film is about the world telling him, ‘It’s time for you to step up and grow up, kid,’ and he’s saying, ‘But I still want to be a kid and go on vacation.’”

This means going on an adventure across Europe, which he’s dragged into by none other than Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), who tells Parker it’s time to suit up or shut up. Over the course of the movie Parker chooses not to put on the Spidey suit and be recognized by the locals, so Fury hands over the stealth suit we’ve seen in the trailers so he can sneak about unnoticed.
One of the biggest takeaways from the first trailer was the inclusion of Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio, donning a sweet costume fit with flowing cape and fishbowl helmet – which looks cooler than it sounds. The character is a notable villain in the Spidey universe, but in a new image, we can see the two characters shaking hands, hinting they will be working together for at least some time.

As for their relationship, Watts says that “If Tony Stark was sort of the mentor in the previous films, we thought it would be interesting to play Mysterio as almost like the cool uncle."
While he may get to play secret agent and help save the day, Holland wanted to make sure they could make sure Spidey just as relatable to people as he was in HOMECOMING. That meant listening to fan comments from the last solo movie, with Holland saying they "tried to tailor the script in a way so that we could hit so many different relatable scenarios, so that not a single person in the world felt left out watching this movie.”
Much of what goes on in FAR FROM HOME has caused speculation, mostly in regards to the fact the character turned into kitty litter in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. That's led to think pieces on how ENDGAME ends, or that this movie might take place before the events of INFINITY WAR, like ANT-MAN & THE WASP. Who knows how it fits in time-wise, but all I know is the movie looks insanely fun, and Gyllenhaal flying around in a fishbowl helmet looks just about as life-changing to watch as it sounds.
SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME is in theaters July 5.
