Andrew Garfield fans have kept his name trending on social media in regards to him returning to play Spider-Man to complete his trilogy in The Amazing Spider-Man 3. This has been sparked by the actor’s return in Spider-Man: No Way Home which saw him joined by Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire, to join Tom Holland’s version of the character to defeat a slew of multiverse villains from their respective films. Garfield has emerged as the fan-favorite, with many calling for his return to the franchise. Fans got really excited when they saw comments from Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man stunt double, William Spencer, that alluded to a possible return for a third installment but, as it turns out, they may have misinterpreted what he was trying to say.
What sparked the fan excitement was William Spencer making a comment online in response to a fan congratulating him on “getting the call for ASM3.” Spencer thanked them for their words and that’s when fans took that as a confirmation that a third Amazing Spider-Man was indeed happening. Noticing that the response was getting out of hand, Spencer returned to his Instagram account to clarify his comment which was taken out of context.
The message is pretty direct and it’s in response to the Twitter post made by @TASMFELICIA, which shared the original conversation with the stunt double and said “ANDREW GARFIELD’S STUNTMAN JUST CONFIRMED TASGM 3?!!! WE KEEP WINNING.” During his follow up on Instagram, Spencer made it very clear that he knows nothing about whether there will be a third film for Andrew Garfield and he doesn’t want his name to be used to promote rumors:
“This is a MISUNDERSTANDING . I thought this fan was talking the current movie and was abbreviating and I didn’t read carefully enough, I apologize for that. I answered a lot of congratulations messages about the movie that just came out and I was trying to write all the fans back to make sure they knew I appreciated their excitement over No Way Home not over any new project. Once again I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT ANY NEW SPIDER-MAN MOVIE WITH ANDREW GARFIELD. I AM GLAD THE FANS ARE SO EXCITED BUT PLEASE DO NOT ASSUME THINGS THAT ARE NOT TRUE THEN PUT THEM ON ME.”
There is a HUGE level of excitement for Andrew Garfield to return to complete his own trilogy and the groundswell of the response has been very positive. A lot of these online movements can get out of hand but a lot of what’s going on throughout social media seems more about putting love and respect on Andrew Garfield’s name rather than demanding this film actually become a reality. Some have compared this to the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut but I don’t think it has gotten quite to that level yet. The funny thing is, Sony clearly has heard about all of the social media chatter and has done nothing to calm it down. Either they think this is a great cross-promotion opportunity for Spider-Man: No Way Home or perhaps their wheels are turning for an Andrew Garfield return. We’ll just have to wait and find out!
