In its first week of digital release, Deadline is reporting that the film pulled in over 2.1 million units of U.S. sales. For those keeping score at home, that equates to $42 million in its first week on digital. The film was made available on March 15, 2022, and it’s being claimed as a digital sales industry record for a film in its first week. The movie is running for about $19.99 on digital and this is just the beginning of its journey in the homes of moviegoers. I imagine when the film hits Blu-ray and 4K on April 12, 2022, more records will be broken.
Spider-Man: No Way Home hit digital 88 days after its theatrical release, which is a rare theatrical window, especially during the pandemic. Most films are doing 45 days and some are even shorter depending on their theatrical box office performance. It’s clear that No Way Home is the exception and not the rule but it has given other studios hope that their tentpole releases can make a killing at the box office and then gain even more traction on digital and beyond after respecting the theatrical window. To date, the film has grossed $800.5 million domestically and $1.88 billion worldwide.
