Do you know what softens the blow of Morbius majorly underperforming for Sony Pictures recently? Looking at the massive amount of profit the studio made from the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home. According to a new report from Deadline, the movie made them A LOT of money.
Per the report, Spider-Man: No Way Home made Sony “well north of $610 million in profit.” The film wrapped up its box office run with a global gross of $1.9 billion and $804 million domestically. Even given its $200 million budget and marketing spend, the studio was still left with $610 million+ to brag about. The highly anticipated Spider-Man sequel began turning a profit after only two weeks in theaters and it respected the theatrical window by playing on the big screen for 88 days, which is the longest window of the pandemic era so far. Sony points to film respecting the theatrical window as a key reason for its success. The studio made the film an event and moviegoers responded.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is going to keep generating money for Sony as it’s not available on Blu-Ray and 4K and it was doing very well via PVOD ahead of its physical media release. It’ll be interesting to see what the Blu-Ray and 4K sales will be like because I predict they will be massive.
So many people have credited the film for saving the theatrical experience during the pandemic and I would say it deserves A LOT of that credit. We’ve had hits during the pandemic era but Spider-Man: No Way Home packed theaters with numerous sold-out screenings and it really reminded people how great the communal experience is of seeing an event film on the big screen.
Are YOU surprised that Spider-Man: No Way Home turned such a huge profit for Sony?
