One of the most highly-anticipated sequels has officially started production. Animator Nick Kondo revealed that he started his first day on SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE 2 via his social media.
Kondo posted a short little teaser video announcing his first day on the job for the sequel. The teaser doesn't reveal any details on what the sequel will be about but I'm sure it started a little hype with the fans. This is pretty big news, especially with everything shutting down and beginning to reopen again. The entertainment industry has largely been shut down since the middle of March and while I'm sure Kondo and others working on the project are doing their jobs remotely at the moment, it's still encouraging to have a big movie like this announce the start of production. You can check out Kondo's teaser video and announcement below:

SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE 2 will be helmed by Joaquim Dos Santos. The first installment had a trio of directors that included Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman. Written by Rothman and Phil Lord, SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE became a huge hit for Sony as it scored with moviegoers and critics alike. The film grossed $375 million worldwide against a $90 million budget and the movie went on to win numerous awards, including Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards, 46th Annie Awards, and 76th Golden Globe Awards. The film became the first non-Disney/Pixar film to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature since RANGO in 2011.
In the film, Miles Morales becomes the new Spider-Man and joins other Spider-People from various dimensions to team up to save New York City from Kingpin. The movie features the vocal talent of Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Luna Lauren Velez, John Mulaney, Kimiko Glenn, Nicolas Cage, and Liev Schreiber.
I'm really looking forward to this follow-up because the first film was a pleasant surprise for me. We have a bit of a wait for the sequel but SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE 2 hits screens on October 7, 2022.
