I don’t know how many people were expecting Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to become one of the best Spider-Man movies of all-time, but that’s exactly what happened. The tremendous success of the first movie certainly set a high bar for the sequel, but it sounds as though Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is more than up to the challenge. The Spider-Verse is already off to an impressive start at the box-office, scoring $16 million in Thursday previews.
“After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters the Spider Society, a team of Spider-People charged with protecting the Multiverse’s very existence,” reads the official Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse synopsis. “But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must set out on his own to save those he loves most. Anyone can wear the mask – it’s how you wear it that makes you a hero.” Across the Spider-Verse features the voices of Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Vélez, Jake Johnson, Jason Schwartzman, Issa Rae, Karan Soni, Daniel Kaluuya, and Oscar Isaac. The film was directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson from a script by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham.
Our own Chris Bumbray loved the sequel, saying that it was “beyond anything I could have hoped for.” His only caveat is that “despite a two-hour and twenty-minute running time, we’re only getting half the story, with Beyond the Spider-Verse due for release next year. Yet, it’s an entirely engrossing animated epic that proves, as its predecessor did, that imagination is the only limitation for these films.” Bumbray added that the movie is “one heck of a ride, with gorgeous visuals and an expertly crafted soundtrack that includes, for my money, the year’s best score (so far) by the great Daniel Pemberton. Indeed, superhero movies are on the verge of a major re-invention between this and The Flash. It’ll be interesting to see if the proper MCU can keep up, as both of these movies, which come out within mere weeks of each other, change the game.” You can check out the rest of Bumbray’s review right here.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is currently sitting at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, placing it only a single digit behind the original’s 97%. Let us know what you thought of the film in the comments below!
