Spider-Man 3: Tom Holland denies Tobey Maguire & Andrew Garfield appearances

Tom Holland is still in the midst of production on his third standalone Spider-Man film, and there have been all sorts of rumours revolving around its rather interesting cast; in addition to Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, and Marisa Tomei, we've also heard that Benedict Cumberbatch will show up as Doctor Strange, Jamie Foxx as Electro, and Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus, but there have also been frequent rumblings that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will be reprising their Spider-Man roles as well.

It was just days ago that Tom Holland claimed not to know if Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield were in the movie or not, but in an interview with Esquire, he sounds pretty certain that the former web-slingers won't be showing up in the film.

No, no, they will not be appearing in this film. Unless they have hidden the most massive piece of information from me, which I think is too big of a secret for them to keep from me. But as of yet, no. It’ll be a continuation of the Spider-Man movies that we’ve been making.

It's important to note that Tom Holland has earned something of a reputation for accidentally revealing spoilers, so it's not hard to imagine that Marvel wouldn't give him the whole story. "I honestly have no idea what this film is about and I'm eight weeks into shooting it," Holland said, apparently only somewhat kidding. Upon arriving on set for this latest Spider-Man film, Holland was only given the first seventy pages of the script as well as a brief outline of the conclusion, but he suspects that Marvel omitted certain things or perhaps even gave him decoy information. "They do it all the time," Holland said. "In [Avengers: Endgame], Robert Downey Jr.’s funeral scene, for the longest time I was under the impression that it was a wedding. I’m 100 percent sure that they’re still tricking me." Holland has previously teased that this film is the "most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made," which definitely isn't a small boast considering what has come before.

Tom Holland's third standalone Spider-Man film is currently slated for a December 17, 2021 release.
