Speed 4K: the Keanu Reeves & Sandra Bullock classic is getting an upgrade

Pop quiz hotshot – you’re one of the most acclaimed and beloved action movies of the nineties, but you’re still not out in 4K. What do you do? What. Do. You. Do?

Well, if you’re True Lies, I guess you just wait for James Cameron to finally take a break from filming all of those Avatar movies, but another 1994 action classic, Jan de Bont’s Speed, is finally making its ultra high definition debut in May. Fans will likely breathe a sigh of relief, as ever since Fox got bought out by Disney 4K upgrades of their classic films seem to have gone on the backburner. It’s unacceptable that some of the greatest action movies ever made still haven’t gotten 4K releases, right? Point Break, Romancing the Stone, Aliens, True Lies & The Abyss (neither of which even got a Blu-ray release or an anamorphic DVD)-  none of them are up to date with cutting-edge home media. Luckily, with Speed set to hit Ultra HD May 4th, perhaps some of our old favorites all start getting upgrades.

Fun fact – I almost missed out on Speed in theaters. The day I saw it I was originally going to see Beverly Hills Cop 3, as I figured it would be more “bad-ass” than a bus movie starring Keanu Reeves. How WRONG I was. My dad convinced me to see Speed and it became one of my favorite movies as a kid, I wore out the VHS tape, idolized Keanu, and had a MASSIVE crush on Sandra Bullock (still do actually). Suffice to say, I was devastated when Speed 2: Cruise Control turned out to be such a massive turd, but I digress.

Most of the DVD extras from the old 5-star collector's edition are being ported over it seems. I can’t wait to watch this one in 4K, and hopefully, Disney starts cranking out more remasters.
