It seems like we’re constantly in limbo about the state of the planned Spawn film from Todd McFarlane, which is set to star Jamie Foxx. A fresh reboot was announced in 2015, which would have McFarlane writing the film and making his directorial debut on the project. The film is set up at Blumhouse, but since its original announcement, it has been hit with numerous delays. McFarlane remains confident that the movie will be made and is teasing that a big announcement regarding the Spawn film will be made later this year at New York Comic-Con.
Screen Rant hosted McFarlane at their San Diego Comic-Con media suite, and he was asked if he had any fresh news on his planned Spawn film. The comic book legend did confirm that the pandemic did add to the delays that have hit the project, but he also said they are moving forward on the reboot. That is when he added that he had some big news in store for New York Comic-Con in October:
We decided, “You know what, let’s just do it in New York.” We’ll do it in New York [Comic Con].
Are we moving? Are we adding pieces? All of the above, yes. The best I can say right now, besides all that’s been happening, is that it kind of got slowed down during the pandemic and then picked back up. Especially given that, for a while, the only movies people were going to during the pandemic were superhero movies – minus James Bond. Now you get Maverick, and some of the big blockbusters that are coming back to normal.
But at New York Comic Con, there is going to be a big announcement.”
Created by Todd McFarlane, “Spawn” is a comic book that was first published in 1992 by Image Comics and, as of 2019, it’s the longest-running creator-owned comic book series. There was a film adaptation done back in 1997, starring Michael Jai White and John Leguizamo, but it was met with overall poor reviews and so-so box office.
McFarlane expressed his desire to make an R-rated Spawn reboot after the disappointing release of the 1997 film. The reboot finally gained some traction when Jamie Foxx signed onto the film in 2018, and it was also announced that Jason Blum was producing while McFarlane would be taking on writing and directing duties. The reboot is said to have a different tone than the original film and will be more in the horror genre. According to McFarlane, the film will go “dark” and “ugly” with less fun and more serious and supernatural elements. McFarlane has been pretty secretive about the script and plot other than saying it’s not an origin story.
Do YOU think we will finally get some BIG Spawn news at New York Comic-Con this year?
