Now that LOGAN is a bona fide moneymaker, and the DEADPOOL 2 teaser has everyone all hot and bothered like teens at the beach, we can probably expect to see more R-rated superheroes coming onto the screen. This is the time to shine for characters with more adult backgrounds to come into the light, and that includes Todd McFarlane’s Spawn. The comic legend has been working for years to get a new movie made, and now may be the time.
In fact, while speaking at Emerald City Comic Con McFarlane got the crowd riled up by mentioning he plans for the movie to be a hard R, citing it will go even more extreme than DEADPOOL and LOGAN:
Listen, I’m going to paint it for you. The movie is going to be a dark R…If here’s PG-13 and here’s Deadpool and here’s Logan, we’re going to be here. It’s going to be dark. It’s going to be nasty.
Given the craving from audiences for more adult-geared comic book movies, the possibility of McFarlane actually getting to make his movie has never been greater. The character has a firm fan base that desperately wants a proper adaptation, and now is the time when studios may want to explore bolder options in the superhero movie world. We all love Spider-Man, but chances are small he's gonna disembowel someone anytime soon.
McFarlane’s passion is intoxicating, but I think this movie will only get made with some A-list talent somewhere in the mix. Whether it be the star, the director or whoever, there has to be someone involved who audiences somewhat know, and will help generate interest. We may not have a DEADPOOL movie if not for Reynolds in the lead, and the same may prove true if a known actor doesn’t take Spawn. But I hope we get a proper movie around Spawn, just so I can see how “nasty” it can get. Does he just mean he’s bringing back John Leguizamo?
