Space screwups can get you killed in this hilarious SNL short

Space films have been a staple of cinema going back as far as 1902's A TRIP TO THE MOON. There's something glorious and enamoring about the vast cosmos. Whether it's the majesty of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, Luke Skywalker crossing light sabers with Darth Vader in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, or Ben Affleck trying to save the world from a giant asteroid in ARMAGEDDON, audiences keep coming back for more. Additionally, there's a fundamental truth about space that Hollywood continually explores as well: space is terrifying.

Now it's one thing to make a mistake at your normal 9 to 5 cubicle job. Chances are no one's going to get hurt. However, a mistake in space can literally get you killed. It's a theme filmmakers have examined quite extensively in recent years with films like GRAVITY and THE MARTIAN. In SNL's latest digital short, the sketch comedy show takes aim at potential vacuum follies with "Space Mistakes." The short follows Chance the Rapper's sojourn into the blackness of space, where he's continually warned not to make mistakes.

So of course mistakes happen. Cracked helmets. punctured hulls, even pressing a mistake button. Mistakes abound in this video. Check out the clip below:

Now I'm not sure if NASA's official model is "no oopsies," but it should be. Not going to lie, a horrified laugh was jerked out of me when the guy who forgot to buckle his seat belt exploded. Also the final line about seeing the film in IMAX or on a plane because there's nothing inbetween is an absolute truth bomb.

2019 has certainly seen its fair share of space of adventures, everything from the visual stunner AVENGERS: ENDGAME to the cerebral AD ASTRA. Audiences also won't have to wait too much longer for the next great space opera, as STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER blasts its way into theaters December 20.
