Space Jam sequel with LeBron James scores summer 2021 release date

The Michael Jordan-Looney Tunes mashup SPACE JAM holds a special place in the hearts and minds of 90s kids everywhere, often referenced alongside French Toast Crunch as a cornerstone of their upbringing. Now the movie is getting a long-awaited sequel starring current NBA icon LeBron James (TRAINWRECK) and from producer Ryan Coogler (BLACK PANTHER), and the movie just took one step closer to the court by solidifying a July 16, 2021 release date.

While hinted at being close to a start date for some time (like, a long time), the much-talked-about sequel starring James got a major boost when it was announced back in September that Coogler would come on as a producer, with the basketball star also producing through his Springhill Entertainment banner. Set to be directed by RANDOM ACTS OF FLYNESS helmer Terence Nance, the movie will team James with some of your favorite members of the Looney Tunes, including Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, Wayne Knight and Bill Murray. Okay, maybe not ALL of those characters will be back…

“The Space Jam collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie,” James said back in September. “It's so much bigger. I'd just love for kids to understand how empowered they can feel and how empowered they can be if they don't just give up on their dreams. And I think Ryan did that for a lot of people.”

This movie has been gestating for years and years, and with good reason. The movie is the highest grossing basketball movie ever with $250 million worldwide (that's way more when inflation is accounted), despite the fact it really isn't very good. In fact, in attempts to rewatch, I feel like Mountain Dew is being injected directly into my eyeballs and I have to stop. Still, this should be a movie fans of the original can take their kids to, and they'll have plenty of time to prepare them with the release over two years away.
