Space Jam: A New Legacy: Michael Jordan will appear but not how you’d expect

Twenty five years ago, Michael Jordan was enlisted by the Looney Tunes to help them win a basketball match against a group of nefarious aliens. Featuring an all-star cast of the NBA's finest as well as the Looney Tunes themselves, Space Jam was a box-office success and has become a favourite of those who grew up with the film.

Warner Bros. had been attempting to develop a Space Jam sequel since the release of the first time, but each incarnation of the project wound up falling apart. LeBron James officially joined the project in 2014, and after a lengthy development, Space Jam: A New Legacy is ready to be unleashed. Although James is clearly the star this time around, fans have been wondering if Michael Jordan might still have a part to play, and while speaking with Access Hollywood, Space Jam: A New Legacy star Don Cheadle let it slip that the basketball legend will appear in the sequel.

Michael Jordan is in the movie, but not in the way that you would expect it.

Just what form Michael Jordan's appearance in Space Jam: A New Legacy will take remains to be seen, but it's nice to know that he'll still be involved in some fashion. In addition to LeBron James and Don Cheadle, the film also stars Sonequa Martin-Green and Cedric Joe as LeBron's wife and son.

The official synopsis for Space Jam: A New Legacy:

Welcome to the Jam! NBA champion and global icon LeBron James goes on an epic adventure alongside timeless Tune Bugs Bunny with the animated/live-action event “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” from director Malcolm D. Lee and an innovative filmmaking team including Ryan Coogler and Maverick Carter. This transformational journey is a manic mashup of two worlds that reveals just how far some parents will go to connect with their kids. When LeBron and his young son Dom are trapped in a digital space by a rogue A.I., LeBron must get them home safe by leading Bugs, Lola Bunny and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to victory over the A.I.’s digitized champions on the court: a powered-up roster of professional basketball stars as you’ve never seen them before. It’s Tunes versus Goons in the highest-stakes challenge of his life, that will redefine LeBron’s bond with his son and shine a light on the power of being yourself. The ready-for-action Tunes destroy convention, supercharge their unique talents and surprise even “King” James by playing the game their own way.

Space Jam: A New Legacy will be released in theaters and on HBO Max on July 16, 2021, and it was recently announced that the original 1996 film will be released on 4K Ultra HD on July 6, 2021.
