HBO Max is not messing around.
Yesterday, the world got a taste of what would be heading to Home Box Office's newest streaming platform, which debuts next year. A slew of film and TV titles will be available immediately, everything from JOKER to Rick and Morty. HBO Max will also showcase original programming including a series based on Green Lantern, and House of the Dragon, a Game of Thrones prequel series that follows the Targaryens' initial conquest of Westeros.
And now you can count South Park among the streamer's acquisitions.
HBO Max has won the bidding war for exclusive streaming rights to Trey Parker and Matt Stone's irreverent satirical cartoon. The deal is valued at somewhere in the neighborhood of $500 to $550 million dollars. (Damn that's a lot of cheesy poofs!) Parker and Stone's deal covers all twenty-three seasons of South Park including three new seasons. New episodes will be available on HBO Max twenty-four hours after it debuts on Comedy Central.
Reports of a bidding war for the outrageous animated series heated up earlier this month with Netflix being the front runner. However that deal fell through due to Netflix's desire to have global rights as well as domestic. South Park is currently streaming on the Disney-owned Hulu and will remain there until June of next year when it makes the leap to HBO Max.
Unfortunately, if you want to keep streaming the Comedy Central cartoon, next summer you're going to have to open your wallet a little wider. Hulu's current base package costs $5.99/month but an HBO Max subscription will run you $14.99. When you switch Randy Marsh will also scream "Change!" out of your phone as well. (OK, maybe not that last but that would be awesome.)
HBO Max shows DEADPOOL-level effort in May 2020.
