There are many things that make a movie what it is. It all starts with a story (according to what every How-To book on screenwriting tells us), there is the director and his crew, there are the actors, who bust their asses to bring a vision to life. Then comes the wonderful world of post-production. What is one result of that? The music. Soundtracks enhance the movie going experience. They can make us cry, they can pump us up, they can make us remember the 80’s. Whether it be a musical band or a composer, soundtracks help our favorite movies stay etched in our mind forever.
A lovely little rumor circulated the web the other day that Mike Myers had just completed a script for a potential Wayne’s World 3. The general opinion of the fans seemed positive, we wanted more from these two, said rumor has since been debunked by Myers himself. While disappointing, I still found it fitting to pay tribute to a pair of films that acted as a love letter to a certain age that had its fair share of magic. The movement these two represented catered to the sensibilities of many, so without further adieu…party on schmoes.
1. BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY – QUEEN
Oh the memories this song and the scene it accompanies have given me. Never mind how awesome the famous scene is on its own, but take into account recreating it with your family at least once every week. I used to have a decent head of hair when it came to length, those were fun times…I’ve since buzzed it; some of the magic is gone. Anyway, you can tell how much fun the lot of them were having with the headbanging extravaganza in particular, but they seemed to be having a blast for the whole damn film. That’s what made Wayne’s World so infectious. Myers and Carvey, you two are master lip syncers my friends. Purchase the soundtrack here
2. FEED MY FRANKENSTEIN – ALICE COOPER
If they just featured this whole song in the film I would have been a happy camper. Who has more style than Alice Cooper? You know I have to say, I was proud of my musical taste as a young tyke. As I write this I sit here and remember rewinding the concert scene over and over to jam out to Cooper’s innuendo ridden masterpiece of a track. It makes me wish I could have been young in the heyday of these guys rocking the stage. Ah well, guess I just wasn’t worthy. I’m scum! I suck! Purchase the soundtrack here
3. FOXY LADY – JIMMI HENDRIX
In a long list of fantasy scenes, a track from the wizard Jimmi Hendrix is used to show us that Garth does indeed have what it takes to woo the fairer sex. Let me share a funny and humiliating story with you schmoes, Wayne’s World was one of the VHS tapes I obsessively wore out with my fandom, and this is one of the scenes I had the gull to recreate in a way with my fifth grade girlfriend. How did it go over you ask? Well, she had a thing for the Spice Girls, and didn’t appreciate Jimmy. So, when I mouthed the lyrics I could remember while wearing my best suave facial expressions, she laughed till she red in the face. Maybe with my next date I’ll give it another shot? Do you suggest it? Purchase the soundtrack here
4. I LOVE ROCK & ROLL – JOAN JETT
I love me some Joan Jett, and this song is everywhere. When I think of a night in which I get drunk enough to partake in Karaoke, I think of this track. In fact, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that I’ve actually done it and have repressed the memory. I’m reciting the song in my head as I write this addition, and it really seems like a rock anthem doesn’t it? It captures the spirit of what the Wayne’s World films have been all about. It’s a song I love playing at parties to the chagrin of some of the other guests, but not all. Good musical taste is not dead. That’s the positive message I believe a Wayne’s World 3 would have presented. Purchase the soundtrack here
5. YMCA – VILLAGE PEOPLE
Back in sixth grade, in a small town I used to live in, there was monthly event entitled Lip Stock. In this event, students from the middle school were permitted to get on stage and preform any musical piece they saw fit. One year, I and four other chaps preformed this gem. Now much to my regret, we didn’t dress up in the village people get up, but it is a fond memory to look back on nonetheless. Today, more fond memories of this song have been made in the form of singing and preforming YMCA at the top of my lungs in the car while onlookers admire my complete lack of giving a shit. So consider this my challenge to you, if this song isn’t on your musical device, fix this travesty. After you’ve done that, crank this track full blast and rock out like you never have before. Trust me; people around you will appreciate. Purchase the soundtrack here
6. SHUT UP AND DANCE – AEROSMITH
Aerosmith was the heart of Wayne’s World 2. Aerosmith seemed to be the make it or break it act for the destined Waynestock, and boy did they deliver. In true Wayne’s World form, we get a glimpse of several scenarios for what would have happened if Steven Tyler and his merry band pulled a “no show Jones”. But we were not robbed of a happy ending, they came, we shut up and danced, and all was right in Wayne’s World. Perhaps the reason a Wayne’s World 3 turned out to be a crock was because Myers felt the characters went out on a high note, while the selfishness fan in my says bullshit, I’m inclined to agree.
