For an article about Sony relying too much on their Spider-Man franchise, Variety spoke with Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal, who without a hint of irony, revealed there's going to be a new Spidey movie every year. This isn't too surprising since a third and fourth film have already been announced (as well as VENOM and SINISTER SIX movies) but I don't think many of us expected a new film to be released every year.
“We are expanding the ‘Spider-Man’ universe into ‘The Sinister Six’ and ‘Venom,’ so that we have ‘Spider-Man’ movies every year."
Maybe she's exaggerating a bit, however considering how many films have been released by Marvel, it would make sense for Sony to follow a similar path. The third and fourth SPIDER-MAN movies are scheduled to hit theaters in 2016 and 2018, so there's a chance VENOM or SINISTER SIX could be released in 2017, and Sony is probably developing other films as well featuring characters from Spider-Man's cinematic universe.
Also in Variety's article comes word Marc Webb will be back to direct THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3. Like this morning's news about Joss Whedon and THE AVENGERS 3, many of us assumed Marc Webb would return, but now we know for sure he'll be back for the third movie.
We've known for a while now Sony has huge plans for Spider-Man and his cinematic universe, but will this be too much Spidey? I guess it all depends on your opinion on Marc Webb's movies, and how much you love the webslinger.
THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 will be released on May 2nd, 2014, followed by THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 on June 10th, 2016, and THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 4 on May 4th, 2018.
