Sony to celebrate The Karate Kid with special 35th anniversary screenings

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Now that THE KARATE KID has resurfaced as a beloved part of today's pop culture zeitgeist – thanks in-part to the overwhelming success of YouTube Premium's COBRA KAI web series – it's now time to wax and sand the original for a special two-day anniversary event. Today Sony Pictures and Fathom Events have announced that, as a way of honoring the film's 35th anniversary, Fathom will screen director John G. Avildsen's THE KARATE KID in theaters.

In addition to screenings of the 1984 original martial arts drama, the event will also include a custom introduction from Ralph Macchio and William Zabka and a COBRA KAI Season 2 Sneak Peek. Furthermore, the screening will arrive courtesy of a digital print of THE KARATE KID, sourced from the 2019 4K restoration from the original negative. Showings will also include the film's remastered 5.1 audio.

Here's the official description from Fathom Events:

Practice your wax on, wax off for a special 35th anniversary showing, of the Karate Kid! Ralph Macchio stars as Daniel, a teenager whose growing pains are made that much more difficult by his arrival in a new town where he must start from scratch and make new friends. He quickly becomes the target of the Cobras, a menacing gang of karate students, who are less than pleased when he strikes up a relationship with Ali (Elisabeth Shue), the Cobra leader's ex-girlfriend. Eager to fight back and impress his new girlfriend, he begs his handyman, Miyagi (Pat Morita), a martial arts master, to teach him karate. Under Miyagi's wise tutelage, Daniel developed not only the physical skills but also the maturity, faith and self-confidence to compete despite tremendous odds as he encounters the fight of his life in the exciting finale.

Tickets for the event, which is scheduled to take place on both May 31 and April 2 are on sale now! To purchase tickets to the event click here.
