It's been more than two years since we last reported on the remake of the Dutch thriller TAPED, which was first announced in February of 2012 when Columbia Pictures acquired the rights to give the film the remake treatment, but since that initial report things have been silent on the project. That changes today as Variety is now reporting that GRAN TORINO and THE JUDGE screenwriter Nick Schenk has been tapped to pen the remake for Sony Pictures.
The film is a remake of the 2012 pic that follows a young American couple vacationing in Buenos Aires who inadvertently tape a murder and finds themselves in a fight for their own lives.
DIVERGENT producers Lucy Fisher and Douglas Wick will produce the pic. Hannah Minghella and Jonathan Kadin overseeing for the studio.
With a title like TAPED one might think that this will be another entry in the found footage subgenre, but if the original Dutch film is any indication of the direction Schenk will take with this remake then we don't have to worry about this being another found footage thriller. The original film does follow a couple chronicling their adventures on a small handi-cam, but the film didn't rely on the found footage format to tell the complete story, instead using a mix of first-person perspective and traditional narrative.
More on TAPED, including word on who will be directing and casting news, as we hear it.
