Sony in talks with Melissa McCarthy and others for Ghostbusters reboot

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

It looks like the cast is beginning to formulate as Melissa McCarthy is currently in talks to star in Paul Feig's female-led reboot of GHOSTBUSTERS. Previously, there was just rumors and talk with actresses who may or may not be involved with the new spin on the classic Ivan Reitman film but now we are hearing the first hints of concrete casting for the film.

The Hollywood Reporter says that the talks are still in the very early stages but if McCarthy's schedule can be maneuvered she seems like a lock to reunite with her BRIDESMAIDS and THE HEAT director for a fourth time. McCarthy is still committed to her CBS sitcom MIKE & MOLLY as well as the MICHELLE DARNELL from her husband/director Ben Falcone.

The article also mentions Emma Stone, 22 JUMP STREET's Jillian Bell, and SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE's Cecily Strong are all positioned for roles with Stone recently turning down a role in J.C. Chandor's DEEPWATER HORIZON which leaves her open. Strong and Bell have taken meetings with Paul Feig, as has Jennifer Lawrence and Rebel Wilson. If McCarthy gets this role, I would expect she would be the lead which may count out anyone like Lawrence, Wilson, or Stone from upstaging her.

Fans of GHOSTBUSTERS have been lamenting this news since it was announced. A third GHOSTBUSTERS has been in development for decades, so fans are used to waiting for a new movie. The question is whether they will have any interest in this version.
