Although there were certainly a few bumps along the road, Sonic the Hedgehog wound up becoming a bigger success than anyone expected. Naturally, it didn't take long for Paramount Pictures and SEGA to get the ball rolling on a sequel. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 will once again star James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog, but there will be a few new additions to the cast as well. Shemar Moore, star of Criminal Minds and S.W.A.T., took to Instagram today to announce that he's joined the cast of the Sonic the Hedgehog sequel.
As for what sort of shenanigans Sonic will find himself getting into with the sequel, nothing has officially been revealed, but a plot synopsis was leaked last month which gives us a pretty good idea. "After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home while they go on vacation," reads the synopsis. "But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr. Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search of an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands."
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will hit theaters on April 8, 2022.
