The popular character Knuckles was revealed on the Sonic The Hedgehog 2 set but not exactly in the way you may have imagined. A stand-in for the Red Echidna was spotted on the set of the sequel which gives fans the first look at the character and it's the closest indication that he will be used in the Paramount Pictures follow-up.
Since the sequel was greenlit last year, there have been rumors that Knuckles would be involved in some capacity. On Tuesday, an image from the set was posted by the Sonic the Hedgehog News & Updates – Tails' Channel on Twitter and it showcases a Knuckles prop standing side-by-side Sonic and Tails. The second photo on the Twitter post features James Marsden and Tika Sumpter in action as they are set to reprise their roles as Tom and Maddie Wachowski from the first film. Paramount Pictures hasn't officially confirmed that Knuckles will be in Sonic The Hedgehog 2 so we don't know in what capacity the character will be used or who will be voicing the fan-favorite character. If Knuckles makes the cut, he would be joining Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic and we still need vocal talent for Miles "Tails" Prower, who also remains uncast.
The sequel is also set to bring back Jim Carrey as the villain Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik. Carrey's performance in the first film was viewed as a highlight by fans and critics who thought the character was a nice callback to some of Carrey's early comedic work that made him a star. The first Sonic The Hedgehog had quite the road to financial success that began with widespread negativity following the first trailer for the film which led to fan backlash and the movie being delayed from its initial release date. Being that video game films tend to be a bust at the box office and with critics, all signs pointed to Sonic being DOA but the film was greeted with a positive reception. Sonic The Hedgehog also had the distinction of being one of the final notable films to play without much interruption in theaters before the COVID-19 pandemic delayed every major title that followed in 2020. The film ultimately grossed $148.9 million at the domestic box office and $319.7 million worldwide.
How much will Knuckles appear in Sonic The Hedgehog 2? Only time will tell but we'll all be able to find it when the film, once again directed by Jeff Fowler with a script from Pat Casey and Josh Miller, hits screens on April 8, 2022.
