Perhaps many of you readers have spent hours in front of a TV, game controller in hand, and controlling the speedy hedgehog Sonic as he runs around loop after loop gathering gold rings and just being generally fast. Now he’s looking much, much different in the first live-action movie starring the blue mammal (voiced by Ben Schwartz), and the first trailer finds him teaming up with average-speed human James Marsden and going up against the whacky and well-mustached Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, who seems to get much glee out of trying to vaporize his blue nemesis.

So, yes, if you thought a live-action Sonic movie that starred Jim Carrey as the villain who also goes by the name Eggman sounded absurd, then you were very much on the nose. The movie looks bonkers as Carrey devours the scenery and everyone in it by being wackier than we’ve seen him in years. Then there’s Sonic, who looks slightly terrifying in live-action form, but then undeniably cool when he speeds up into that blue ball and starts crashing through stuff.
Overall the trailer seems far too frantic, albeit suitably fast-paced, to really get a great sense of the movie. There’s a lot of crazy action scenes teased and a good comedy bit or two, so I genuinely don’t know what to make of this thing just yet. We’re over half the year away from seeing the movie, and this trailer will certainly play well for the younger viewers going into DETECTIVE PIKACHU next week. Okay, even they may be a weirded out.
Directed by Jeff Fowler in his feature-length directorial debut and written by Patrick Casey, Josh Miller and Oren Uziel the movie also stars Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Neal McDonough, and Adam Pally.
