Sofia Coppola to reunite with Bill Murray for On the Rocks film

Acclaimed filmmaker Sofia Coppola and unpredictable actor Bill Murray are getting the band back together for a new project titled ON THE ROCKS. Hailed as the first project established under A24 and Apple’s new partnership, the film will share the story of a young mother who reconnects with her larger-than-life playboy father on an adventure through New York. Set star opposite Murray in the upcoming drama is PARKS AND RECREATION alumna Rashida Jones, who is currently lending her voice to the character Marcy Kappe for Nick Bruno and Troy Quane's animated action adventure SPIES IN DISGUISE. The aforementioned animation comes from 20th Century Fox, and features a cast of greats with Will Smith, Tom Holland, Karen Gillan, Ben Mendelsohn, and Masi Oka all set to star.

In the past, Coppola and Murray have teamed for LOST IN TRANSLATION, the 2003 drama that landed Murray an Oscar nomination for Best Actor and a win for Coppola in the Best Original Screenplay Oscar category. The duo teamed again in 2017 for Murray's variety-style Christmas Special, A VERY MURRAY CHRISTMAS, which Coppola directed. As per her relationship with A24, ON THE ROCKS will be Coppola's second project for the studio, after helming 2013's THE BLING RING. Built as a satirical comedy, THE BLING RING was inspired by actual events, and centered on a group of fame-obsessed teenagers who use the internet to track celebrities' whereabouts in order to rob their homes.

So far, no  word has surfaced as to whether ON THE ROCKS will get a theatrical release, as the details of A24's partnership with Apple have remained unclear since the two activated their Wonder Twin powers in November of 2018. While no release date has been given for ON THE ROCKS, we do know that the film will be featured as a part of A24's upcoming slate of titles, of which include: Clair Denis' HIGH LIFE, Robert Egger's THE LIGHTHOUSE, and Rashid Johnson's NATIVE SUN.
