GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 will reunite the delightful group of buttholes we were introduced to in the first film, including Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoë Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Groot (Vin Diesel, now in adorable bite-size) and Rocket (Bradley Cooper). But we’ll also see some new, but physically older faces, particularly in Kurt Russell’s Ego and Sylvester Stallone’s…whatever his character’s name is! Luckily I have attachment issues, because director James Gunn said this will not be the last time we see either of these guys.
During an interview with Fandango Gunn mused about many things, and was asked towards the end if the roles of these two veterans would be one-offs, or would the MCU be gaining two new recurring characters:
This is definitely not a one-off [for them]. They’re both characters that we’ve taken a lot of time to develop, and they’re a big part of the MCU now.
Russell will of course be playing Ego the Living Planet, who is both a shape-shifting celestial being and Quill’s dad (and a Jesus Christ Superstar alternate). So, the notion of seeing him again is not too surprising of info. However, not much is known about Stallone’s character other than he’s a Nova Corps member. Many assumed when he first got the gig that it could be as small as a fun cameo, but we can now assume he has a much bigger role to play. Maybe he’s the new head of the Nova Corp, and will act as the grizzled police captain who tells the Guardians how far up his ass the space mayor is on this one.
Not too long ago I said that both Russell and Stallone were both two of the aspects of the movie we here were most excited to see, and I thank the stars we’ll be seeing more of them around. The MCU is responsible for bringing new talent into the spotlight, so it’s great these two legends now have a spot in it too. But, please, whoever is up there, make them go on a MCU-themed TANGO AND CASH reunion adventure. Please…please.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL.2 arrives May 5.
