Just shy of its 30th anniversary, the 1982 cult classic The Slumber Party Massacre is getting the remake treatment courtesy of Shout! Studios, with the new Slumber Party Massacre set to premiere on Syfy later this year. While the film has domestic distribution all wrapped up, Shout! is teaming with Raven Banner Entertainment to land some international distribution deals, and they'll be presenting the project to potential buyers at the Cannes Film Festival. As part of this presentation, a "first look" image from the film has been unveiled, and you can see that below. It offers an early glimpse of the girls who are having a slumber party this time around.
The Slumber Party Massacre remake sticks with the franchise tradition of being written and directed by women. In this case, the film has been directed by Danishka Esterhazy (The Banana Splits Movie) from a screenplay by Suzanne Keilly (Leprechaun Returns). It sounds like it's also sticking to the basics of the original film, because the synopsis is familiar:
A slumber party turns into a bloodbath when a power drill-wielding psychopath disrupts the fun.
The film stars Frances Sholto-Douglas, Jane de Wet, Alex McGregor, Nathan Castle, Masali Baduza, Schelaine Bennett, Arthur Falko, Hannah Gonera, Michael Lawrence Potter, Richard White, Rob van Vuuren, Jennifer Steyn, Richard Wright-Firth, Reem Koussa, Larissa Crafford-Lazarus, Mila Rayne, Dean Goldblum, and Reze-Tiana Wessels.
The new Slumber Party Massacre was produced in partnership with Blue Ice Pictures. Bob Emmer, Garson Foos, Jordan Fields, and Brent Haynes served as executive producers.
1982's The Slumber Party Massacre was followed by Slumber Party Massacre II in 1987 and Slumber Party Massacre III in 1990. Films like Sorority House Massacre II and Cheerleader Massacre used stock footage from The Slumber Party Massacre as their own back story, but changed the details.
