The Brazilian slasher movie Skull: The Mask has been available to watch through the Shudder streaming service for a while now, but if you’re not a Shudder subscriber or would like to own a physical media copy of the film you’ll be glad to hear that RLJE Films is giving Skull: The Mask a VOD, Digital HD, and DVD release on October 26th. Check out the trailer in the embed above to see if this movie looks like it’s up your alley.
Directed by Armando Fonseca and Kapel Furman, the film is titled Skull: A Máscara de Anhangá in its native Brazilian Portuguese, so the full translation would be Skull: The Mask of Anhangá. The English title just cuts it a bit short, I suppose because they figured the name Anhangá would leave some potential viewers scratching their heads.
In the film, we learn that Anhangá was “the executioner of Tahawantinsupay”, an ancient god. Here’s the synopsis:
Missing for decades, a mystical artifact rises again in the city of São Paulo. incarnating a primordial being and starting a series of bloody crimes. Officer Beatriz Obdias is in charge of the investigations, while Manco Ramirez, heir of the artifact’s guardian, hunts the destructive creature.
Natallia Rodrigues, Wilton Andrade, Ivo Muller, Ricardo Gelli, Guta Ruiz, and Gilda Nomacce star, with professional wrestler Rurik Jr. as the masked killer that starts hacking his way through São Paulo.
I’m a Brazil enthusiast and spend a lot of time in that country, so Skull: The Mask has been on my radar for a while now and I made sure to watch it as soon as it reached Shudder. I enjoyed the film and found it to be a fun, bloody ride, but I would also caution that it’s not your typical slasher. This one gets very strange.
