The Star Wars Celebration is in hyperspeed, with news covering all corners of the galaxy, including the television front. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which was officially announced last year, was given a teaser today. And although the teaser has not been made available online (yet!), positive word of mouth and a panel have worked to build buzz even further.
According to executive producer Jon Favreau, Skeleton Crew took inspiration from the ‘80s favorites, particularly those produced by Steven Spielberg, something that should hype up fans of a key demographic even more:
Coming-of-age movies like The Goonies and others produced by Amblin Entertainment are just the sort that will get passed on from generation to generation (after all, Goonies never say die), which lines up quite nicely with how the Star Wars movies have grown and endured. As our own Luke Ryan tweeted, “All the Skeleton Crew kids say they got into Star Wars because of their dads.” One dad who seems psyched for Skeleton Crew is star Jude Law, who will be entering the Star Wars franchise as a Jedi, something that was announced at last year’s Star Wars Celebration.
In addition to the teaser, the complete list of directors for Skeleton Crew was announced. Building on the previous unveiling of David Lowery (The Green Knight, this month’s Peter Pan & Wendy) and The Daniels (who received undeserved flak for signing on, despite tackling just one episode), the event also revealed that series creator Jon Watts, Jake Schreier (next year’s MCU entry Thunderbolts), Bryce Dallas Howard (The Book of Boba Fett), and Lee Isaac Chung (The Mandalorian) would be helming episodes.
Although no official release date was announced, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew will come to Disney+ this year, joining the ever-expanding list of Star Wars series. Little is known about the plot, too, although we do know it takes place during the same time as The Mandalorian, that is, a few years after the events of Return of the Jedi.
