Genre picks have always been a big hit at the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival, to the tune of 40 flicks from last year's lineup receiving theatrical distribution. This year the lineup is bringing on the horror in an even bigger way, curating top films from all across the world and paying special attention to the new wave of Japanese horror, the Renaissance of the North American B-movie, and the burgeoning Latin American fantastic genre.
In addition to big ticket numbers like
MAGGIE (the zombie drama starring Arnold Scwarzenegger and Abigail Breslin),
THE GIFT (Blumhouse's new Joel Edgerton thriller),
COOTIES (Spectrevision's killer kid flick starring Elijah Wood),
DEATHGASM (the death metal disasterpiece), and
CONTRACTED: PHASE II (sequel to Eric England's well-received disease horror), a wide variety of horror films has been selected to screen.
Other choice picks include
THE VISIT,
LUDO,
COIN LOCKER GIRL,
ANGELICA,
RABID DOGS, the controversial
MARTYRS remake, and season two of the French television series
Les Revenants.
From Japan comes Takashi Miike's
YAKUZA APOCALYPSE: THE GREAT WAR OF THE UNDERWORLD and a double feature of Toho's
ATTACK ON TITAN and
ATTACK ON TITAN: END OF THE WORLD, and from Sitges' native Catalonia comes the Jaume Balagueró-produced
SUMMER CAMP and
THE CORPSE OF ANNA FRITZ, among many others.
This year, Brigadoon – the Festival’s most alternative category – will be putting together a selection of features including VILLA NABILA, by Syafiq Yusof, which tells the true story of some haunted apartments in Malaysia. THE ENTITITY, a cross between PARANORMAL ACTIVITY and THE RING directed by Eduardo Schuldt, the Brazilian film based on terrifying urban legends O DIABLO MORA AQUÍ by Rodrigo Gasparini and Dante Vescio, and ME AND MY MATES VS. THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE, an Australian comedy directed by Declan Shrubb.
The traditional Sitges Zombie Walk, the parade of the living dead that takes over the streets of Sitges year after year, will be on Saturday, October 10th.
