WHY DON’T YOU PLAY IN HELL’s Sion Sono is back with yet another slice of insane cinema in his street-gang/martial arts action/hip-hop musical epic TOKYO TRIBE. The film recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and has now been snatched up by XLrator Media, who plan on releasing the film in the fall of 2015 as part of its TURBO action label.
TOKYO TRIBE was written and directed by Sion Sono, whose previous film WHY DON'T YOU PLAY IN HELL? won TIFF’s People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award. TOKYO TRIBE stars Ryohei Suzuki and Young Dais and is based on the manga by Santa Inoue. It was produced by Yoshinori Chiba, Kinya Oguchi, and Nobuhiro Iizuka.
In a futuristic, alternate-world Tokyo, the city is made up of ghetto slums and nightclub playgrounds where gangs of wayward youth rule the streets. The city is carved up into ‘hoods, and the crossing of territorial lines quickly leads to riots and rumbles. On the turf ruled by the savage yakuza Big Buppa, the simmering tension is about to boil over into all-out war. Who will emerge victorious? Territory, friendship, pride, love… Everything is put on the line in a desperate struggle for supremacy!
“Audiences have never seen anything like TOKYO TRIBE and will be blown away by its originality, energy, and mind-blowing action and musical sequences that pay homage to everything from Quentin Tarantino to Scarface to West Side Story,” said XLrator Media CEO Barry Gordon.
