After receiving word that the iconic Irish singer, Sinéad O’Connor, has passed away at 56, the music industry feels the sting of another significant loss. The subject of many headlines in the ’90s, O’Connor is famous for the hits “Nothing Compares 2 U,” “Drink Before the War,” a stirring rendition of Nirvana’s “All Apologies,” “Mandinka,” and more. The Irish Times reported her death, saying the Dublin-born siren passed away at the age of 56.
O’Connor’s family released a statement, confirming her passing while expressing their sorrow, saying, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
O’Connor gave fans the gift of 10 studio albums, with her single ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ crowned the world’s number-one song by the Billboard Music Awards in 1990. In 2018, O’Connor converted to Islam and changed her name to Shuhada Sadaqat. She still performed under Sinéad O’Connor and was the subject of a memoir and film focusing on her storied career.
Known to some for ripping up a photograph of Pope John Paul II on Saturday Night Live, O’Connor’s love for her home and people is boundless, with many cherishing her contributions to the music scene and beyond. She was awarded the Classic Irish Album prize at the RTÉ Choice Music Awards earlier this year. After humbly basking in a standing ovation, O’Connor dedicated the award to “each and every member of Ireland’s refugee community.”
Like many of the industry’s great musicians, O’Connor suffered from mental health struggles and drug abuse. Still, rather than hide from the world, she addressed her issues head-on in a memoir called “Rememberings.” In the novel, O’Connor addresses her past behavior and explores parts of her life she scarcely remembers. Overcome with a desire to be an incredible mother to her children and continue being an inspiration to her people, she did her best to pierce the darkness with her bright energy and lust for life.
