Just a few days ago the first trailer for Justin Lin's STAR TREK BEYOND was released and it received somewhat of a mixed reaction, especially from Star Trek fans. Everything from the choice of music to the action-centric focus of the trailer was questioned, but as STAR TREK BEYOND director Justin Lin said, it's only a minute and change of a two hour film. HeyUGuys caught up with Simon Pegg during the premiere of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS and asked for his thoughts on the trailer.
It was very action packed. I was…it was surprising. I found it to be kind of…the marketing people sort of saying ‘everybody come and see this film, it’s full of action and fun’, when there’s a lot more to it than that. I didn’t love it, because I know there’s a lot more to the film. There’s a lot more story, and a lot more character stuff, and a lot more of what I would call ‘Star Trek stuff.’ But, you know, they’ve got to bring a big audience in, they’ve got to bang the drum. So to Star Trek fans, I’d say hang in there, be patient.
Considering that Simon Pegg co-wrote STAR TREK BEYOND in addition to appearing in it, I've got to assume that he knows what he's talking about and that we'll see more "Star Trek stuff" in future trailers. Although the trailer didn't do much for me, I'm still excited to see what the latest adventure of the Enterprise crew will bring. In a recent interview with Nerdist, Simon Pegg said that STAR TREK BEYOND will shift focus away from the Kirk/Spock "bromance" that has been the focus of the past two films and concentrate more on the entire crew.
I felt like now it was time to move away from the bromance thing and concentrate on the idea of the crew as a family living in a small space together, and what it means to all of them. I really love the dynamic between Bones and Spock, so that’s something we’ve kind of concentrated on a little bit with this one. Kirk’s older than his dad was when he died. All that sort of psychological stuff is playing on him. Scotty’s just still Scotty.
STAR TREK BEYOND is set for a July 22, 2016 release.
