Simon Pegg says there may have been a different plan for Rey’s lineage

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI threw a lot at fans of the franchise by turning what they thought was going to happen in this new saga on its ear. One major example – if not the most major – has to do with Rey’s real parentage. The first movie laid the seeds for what we thought would be a huge link between Rey (Daisy Ridley) and some other Jedi, perhaps Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) himself. But in the end, Kylo (Adam Driver) told her that her parents were, in fact, nobodies. She’s the child of junkers, sold for drinking money.

This may have been a big betrayal for anyone expecting her to have a bigger place in all this, but the idea that someone with an unimportant background can become a mighty Jedi is resonating with some. Still, this seemed an odd move for a giant story like this, and Simon Pegg, who had a hand in FORCE AWAKENS' script, has revealed during an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast that J.J. Abrams (director of AWAKENS) may have indeed had bigger plans for her lineage at one point.

Well I know what J.J. kind of intended, or at least what was sort of being chucked around. I think that’s kind of been undone slightly by [The Last Jedi]. I don’t know. I don’t know (laughs). I think Unkar Plutt [Pegg’s CGI alien character] is Rey’s real father.

He continued, saying, "There was some talk about, you know, a kind of relevant lineage for her. But I honestly don’t know, and I don’t know if anybody knows. We shall see.”

As we gathered from LAST JEDI there was never really a set story to be adhered to when director/writer Rian Johnson set out to make the movie. He was simply told to tell the next chapter in the series and was seemingly given a lot of control as to where it went after FORCE AWAKENS. Things may be changed for EPISODE IX (which Abrams is returning for), and perhaps it will be revealed Kylo was just f**king with Rey, which is a theory that has been floating around. Just pick a lane, people!
