Total Film recently had a short chat with X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST screenwriter Simon Kinberg about his new movie, specifically, the Quicksilver controversy and future plans for the character.
Fans were slightly confused when Evan Peters was cast as Quicksilver in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, since it had already been announced (or at least most of us assumed) the character will appear in Joss Whedon's AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. Simon Kinberg says he didn't expect it to be an issue, because at the time they didn't know the character was going to be used in Whedon's upcoming movie.
"It wasn't something we anticipated, because we didn't know they were using him in The Avengers movie. It got publicized weeks after we made the decision that we had done it, and then after that even, I think it was a little while before the controversy started in terms of them using him too."
Some who have already seen X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST have said Even Peters' Quicksilver and his scenes are some of the best parts of the new movie, and Simon Kinberg was asked if the character will be back for the next movie. Kinberg was also asked about Quicksilver's sister Scarlet Witch possibly appearing in a X-MEN film.
"We talked about bringing Scarlet With into the mix for this film, and there was actually a little scene we shot that we ended up cutting from the movie that eluded to her. But it was a sort of interstitial scene that didn't push the movie forward, and so it ended up being cut, like lots of bits and pieces in a movie that's this complicated and with this many characters to follow. But he would absolutely be back for the next X-Men movie."
So Quicksilver will return for X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, and his sister might be joining him. I wasn't sold on the character's design for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST when it was first revealed, however I'm kind of digging it now, and it sounds like Bryan Singer has done a great job bringing the character to the big screen. Glad to hear Quicksilver will be back for X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, although I'm hoping the character will ditch the Pink Floyd shirt and have a real costume for the next movie.
X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST will be in theaters on May 23rd, 2014, and X-MEN: APOCALYPSE will open on May 27th, 2016.
