A little over a year ago Neill Blomkamp shared a few pieces of unoffical concept art for an ALIEN sequel that he had been dreaming up; the internet went wild for them and the project soon became a reality when Fox green-lit the film and hired Blomkamp to direct. Then Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS sequel came back to life and pushed Blomkamp's ALIEN sequel out of the picture, at least for the time being. The film is said to be on-hold until after the release of ALIEN: COVENANT, but Sigourney Weaver told a crowd at a VMware event that she believes the film is still on the way and will be worth the wait.
Well, I think it is. Ridley asked Neill not to make our Alien 'til after 'Prometheus 2.' [Ridley] wanted his movie to shoot and be released first. But it’s an amazing script, and Neill and I are really excited about doing it. We’re doing other things until we can get going on that. I’d be really surprised if we didn't do it, because it’s such a great script, and we love working together. So, it’s just going to take a little bit longer to get out to you, but it’ll be worth the wait.
Production on ALIEN: COVENANT is currently underway under the direction of Ridley Scott and will take place ten years after the events of PROMETHEUS and follow the crew of the colony ship Covenant as they head for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy. They believe they've discovered an uncharted paradise, but it's actually a dark, dangerous world, whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.
ALIEN: COVENANT will hit theaters on August 4, 2017.
