We've got a little casting news to throw you folks regarding Neill Blomkamp's upcoming sci-fi flick CHAPPIE. THR reports, Sigourney Weaver has joined the cast of Neill Blomkamp's newest sci-fi movie, Chappie, just as production gets underway in Johannesburg, South Africa. Right on! She will be joining the previously mentioned Sharlto Copley, who is voicing Chappie, as well as the human cast of Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel, Ninja and Yolandi Visser of South African rap duo Die Antwoord, Jose Pablo Cantillo and Brandon Auret.
The cast has shaped up quite nicely for Blomkamp, so this one outta be pretty damn good. I'll take any chance to check out Weaver in a sci-fi flick!
Chappie tells the story of a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes. The film will star Sharlto Copley as the voice of Chappie, with Ninja and Yolandi Visser, voices of the South African Zef counter-culture movement and members of rap-rave duo Die Antwoord, as the two gangsters.
Blomkamp wrote the screenplay with Terri Tatchell. He is producing the film with Simon Kinberg. Hannah Minghella and Rachel O'Connor are overseeing Chappie for Sony; Brye Adler is doing the same for MRC.
