Almost exactly one year ago today, it was announced that genre regular Maika Monroe would be re-teaming with Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, the writing / directing duo that was behind the 2019 film Villains (watch it HERE), for a sci-fi thriller called Significant Other. Now a trailer for Significant Other has arrived online, and along with that comes the news that the film is going to be released through the Paramount Plus streaming service on October 7th. You can watch the trailer in the embed above.
Not much information has been revealed about Significant Other, but we know that the story centers on
young couple Harry and Ruth, who take a remote backpacking trip through the Pacific Northwest, but things take a dark turn when they realize they may not be alone.
Monroe is joined in the cast by Jake Lacy (White Lotus).
Berk and Olsen made their feature writing and directing debut with the 2015 film Body, and went on to direct the Stake Land sequel The Stakelander and write the Dolph Lundgren / Mike Mendez film Don’t Kill It before making Villains. Monroe’s previous genre credits include the Quibi series The Stranger, Tau, Independence Day: Resurgence, It Follows, The Guest, Flying Monkeys, Bad Blood, and Watcher.
If you missed out on Villains, that one had the following synopsis:
Mickey and Jules are lovers on the run, headed southbound for a fresh start in the Sunshine State. When their car dies after a gas station robbery, they break into a nearby house looking for a new set of wheels. What they find instead is a dark secret and a sweet-as-pie pair of homeowners who will do anything to keep it from getting out.
