Sicario sequel Soldado finds a director, loses Emily Blunt

Whether you like it or not, a follow-up to Denis Villeneuve’s SICARIO is on its way, and Deadline has learned that Italian filmmaker Stefano Sollima is in final talks to direct the sequel, titled SOLDADO. Sollima has helmed feature films such as SUBURRA and A.C.A.B., as well as the Sky Italia crime drama series Gomorra, whose second season premiered last month.

SICARIO scribe Taylor Sheridan is returning to pen SOLDADO, which will follow Benicio Del Toro's Alejandro Gillick and Josh Brolin's CIA agent Matt Graver as they "concern themselves with what is being smuggled across the border between Mexico and the U.S. in the tunnels used to move drugs and illegal immigrants." It was previous reported that Emily Blunt was also expected to reprise her role from the original movie, but according to the site her character will not appear in the sequel.

I'm not familiar with Sollima's work as a director, but based on his credits it seems like he's a good fit for the project, although I am a little bummed that Blunt won't be back for the sequel. If everything goes as planned, production should begin this fall, which means SOLDADO will probably hit theaters sometime next year.
