One of the movies I'm looking forward to checking out as soon as I can is writer-director M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming follow up to his hit films SPLIT and UNBREAKABLE starring Bruce Willis, James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, Sarah Paulson, and Samuel L. Jackson as Mr. GLASS.
And I guess it's fitting in this day-and-age that well before the movie even hits theaters this January, there is already talk about a possible fourth entry in the "UNSPLITTABLE" franchise. Shyamalan himself doesn't seem too jazzed about the idea, but SPLIT and GLASS star James McAvoy seems to be all for it.
James McAvoy:
I can’t speak for Night. I would like there to be more. I think there’s definitely the potential for more in terms of the roles that he’s created and the rationalization for what a superhero or villain is. There’s definitely room for more. But in terms of whether he would feel as fresh, I don’t know.
M. Night Shyamalan:
How about I avoid that question altogether? There’s no good answer to it. I mean, look, I have two new ideas for movies, so I want to write those. Glass is the only movie I’ve ever done that’s related to another movie I’ve ever done. So, it’s not a habit of mine. I like making up new things, and trying new colors, so that’s probably the best answer. Where my sweet spot is, is thinking of a new kind of story each time and trying to make it as best I can, and seeing if it connects with the audience at that time.
So yeah, without Shyamalan's involvement (or even his enthusiasm) the UNSPLITABLE films may very well end with the upcoming GLASS. But never say never in this game, right? After all, whoever would have thought Shamalan's SPLIT was really UNBREAKABLE 2? I sure as hell didn't. But you never know, maybe GLASS will be a secret sequel to LADY IN THE WATER. Urgh. You never know.
The official synopsis for GLASS goes like this:
Following the conclusion of Split, Glass finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.
The sequel will be a presence at the San Diego Comic-Con next month, with a panel scheduled to take place in Hall H on July 20th. Shyamalan will be there with the cast and "a surprise". So keep that in mind everyone headed to this year's event. Spencer Treat Clark and Charlayne Woodard are also returning for this new film, which is all ready, set, and rolling towards a release in a theater near you come January 18th, 2019.
