Showtime’s Twin Peaks series officially set to start production next month

Last month, Twin Peaks co-creator Mark Frost said the revival series that will air on Showtime will begin production in September, and yesterday at the Television Critics Association’s press tour, Showtime head David Nevins confirmed that filming will start next month. And while the series may still get pushed back to 2017, Nevins says it's possible it could premiere in 2016 as originally planned.

I’m hoping we make 2016. It’s not clear. It’s ultimately going to be in their control. They’re going to shoot the whole thing and then they’ll start posting… but I’m hoping sooner rather than later.

Although the series will have more than nine episodes, Nevins says it hasn't been decided yet exactly how many episodes it will contain, and that David Lynch will be behind the camera for all of them. Nevins went on to tease returning cast members, but wouldn't reveal any details on the storyline of the new series.

You should be optimistic that the people that you want will be there, and then there will be some surprises in addition…I promised David…that I wouldn’t say anything, certainly not going into what the content looks like. I feel like its very satisfying. There’s certain basic questions that I had at the end of the original three seasons given where Agent Cooper is, and I think those questions get answered.

Nevins also says he knew they were going to be able to get David Lynch back after he decided to leave the project earlier this year.

I never had any doubts we were going to get him back. This was a huge priority project to me. It became clear that it was going to take more than nine episodes, which was the originally planned for and budgeted length of the series. I really wanted to get David to direct the whole thing, and he wanted to direct the whole thing. We had to work out the details.

David Nevins might be hopeful that the Twin Peaks revival series will air next year, but I still think it will probably debut sometime in 2017. Now all we have to do is not do anything to jinx the project…
