Sometimes I get the privilege of working at JoBlo.com to share with the world something special, something timeless, something epic. Other times, I get to show you the trailer for SHOWGIRLS 2: PENNY’S FROM HEAVEN.
SHOWGIRLS is Paul Verhoeven‘s unintentional comedy about the rise and fall of a Las Vegas showgirl barely played by Elizabeth Berkeley. Gina Gershon, Kyle MacLachlan, Robert Davi, and Rena Riffel co-star and trudge through the awful Joe Eszterhas story that has become something of a punchline to movie fans around the world. SHOWGIRLS has become a stage musical and a midnight movie cult classic but never did I think it would warrant a sequel.
Actress Riffel returns along with some of her SHOWGIRLS costars for SHOWGIRLS 2: PENNY’S FROM HEAVEN. No, that apostrophe is not a typo. Riffel serves as director of the sequel and proves that it is possible to make a movie worse than SHOWGIRLS. Yeah, this looks that bad.
Las Vegas stripper, Penny Slot (Riffel), sets out on an adventure to become the star dancer on a popular television show. With stars in her eyes, she tries to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow – but instead finds drama, danger and snuff movies in a town much more wicked than Sin City. Penny’s longtime fiance/boyfriend (Plummer) warns her that she needs formal technique training if she wants to be taken seriously as a real dancer, so Penny Slot sets out to learn ballet – but, she must pay the price to make it to the top. There are sacrifices to be made at every imaginable level, and it all comes down to… How bad do you want it?
I do not want it. At all. In fact, I am somewhat surprised that this even got made. This looks bad, people. As in THE ROOM level of badness. Even Elizabeth Berkeley had enough sense to stay away from this one. Wow. And before you ask, no this is not getting a theatrical release. If you really want to see SHOWGIRLS 2: PENNY’S FROM HEAVEN you will be able to check it out on DVD or VOD beginning September 17th.
