Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Lucy Liu, and director David F. Sandberg were all on hand at San Diego Comic-Con in Hall H to unveil the first trailer for Shazam: Fury of the Gods, and it was one hell of a way to kick off the day for WarnerMedia and DC Entertainment.
The event kicked off with the packed Hall H crowd yelling out SHAZAM! and then they showed a sizzle reel from Fury of the Gods that features Adam Brody’s character Freddy (in superhero form), saying the team met for the first time at Comic-Con. Star Zachary Levi entered the stage, still looking jacked from playing the titular character, and he went on to say, “We got a cool look at all of the kids getting their superpowers in the last movie, but this is a few years later, and they’ve been doing missions for a few years. Now they’re trying to figure out who they are between their younger selves and superhero form. So it’s about to the growing pains they all face.”
Asher Angel is back as young Billy Batson, and he explains that the future is uncertain for the character, which weighs on him. He feels he might be forced to leave the foster home and his family when he turns 18. Helen Mirren was on deck via zoom and joked that she was banned from Comic-Con after beating someone up who cut in line. She also told Zachary Levi she enjoyed kicking his ass and loved the “pussy power” she shared with her sisters. Mirren plays Hespera, while Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler play her sisters. Liu, who plays Kalypso, jokingly said, “Yes, lost of pussies in the house, guys. LOTS of pussies.”
An audience member asked if Shazam would fight Superman, and Levi jokingly said, “You can’t ask me that question; I can neither confirm nor deny, but no!” They also asked if there would be a Superman cameo, and director David F. Sanberg said that’s a spoiler question, but a lot is going on in the movie.
A young child in attendance asked if they would make a Shazam 3, and Levi said, “If you guys go and this and you like it, the bosses will make another one. I love playing this character.” When Levi was asked if Shazam would face Black Adam and will he do it alone or with his family, Levi jokingly shouted, “NEXT QUESTION!”
Lucy Liu was asked if this was her best role ever. Liu affectionately answered by saying, “To be a part of the DC Universe, and this role is the most exciting thing to ever happen to me during my career because I grew up reading DC Comics.” She definitely seems stoked to have this moment.
David F. Sandberg is returning to direct the film from a screenplay by Henry Gayden. The film also stars Megan Good, Grace Caroline Currey, Djimon Hounsou, P.J. Bryne, Ross Butler, and D.J. Cotrona.
Shazam: Fury of the Gods hits screens on December 21, 2022.
