One of the biggest and best surprises of the year perhaps shouldn’t be all that surprising. Over the past few years, Ryan Reynolds has cemented himself as one of the brightest comedic action stars working today. He certainly kicked massive ass in Deadpool – mind you, with a ton of humor. His latest, Free Guy, is a charmer. It’s a feel-good, witty, and sometimes even a little wise, sort of celebration of the little guy. It also helps that the filmmaker behind such films as Real Steel and Night of the Museum is involved. And don’t forget about the hit Netflix series Stranger Things – he is the executive producer and takes some time behind the camera directing a few episodes. Producer and director Shawn Levy brings a unique quality to his work. His projects manage to explore the human condition in a delightful fantasy world with a massive heart.
I recently sat down to chat with Mr. Levy about the new film Free Guy. The filmmaker opened up about building a world around a character like “Blue Shirt Guy.” The story may be lighthearted and fun, but the film has a little something to say about how we can be more than we think we are. It’s a strong message with humor and filled with excellent performances from Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery. Levy opened up about the casting, and especially, having Taika Waititi as one of his actors. And for those of you that would love to see another Real Steel, it appears that Mr. Levy is very interested in the prospect of that – along with Mr. Hugh Jackman himself. For now, we have a brand new flick filled with tons of laughs and a whole lot of sweetness as well. Check out Free Guy in theatres today!
