I got caught up in the SHARKNADO insanity as much as anyone because it was fun and free. Anyone with basic cable was able to tune into the abysmally bad Asylum schlock movie starring Ian Ziering, Tara Reid, and John Heard. Hell, SyFy got such a social media boost that they greenlit SHARKNADO 2. But, now Regal Cinemas is taking it too far.
They are bringing SHARKNADO to the big screen. On August 2nd, you will be able to fork over $12.50 for a midnight screening of the movie at 200 Regal locations across America. The goal is to create a communal viewing experience similar to another cheezy movie.
“You know how audiences have had fun with Rocky Horror Picture Show over the years. If the internet reactions to this film are any indication, then our moviegoers are primed and ready to enjoy Sharknado larger than life in cinemas,” Chris Sylvia, director of digital marketing for Regal Entertainment Group, said in a statement. “Regal is proud to be giving our guests this chance to fuel the social media whirlwind by inviting friends to come to the show and tweeting reactions.”
While ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW is a midnight movie staple, that film is intentionally over the top and pays homage to unintentionally bad movies from the 1950s and 1960s. SHARKNADO is just bad. There are so many other movies that are over the top fun that you could spend your money on this Summer (PACIFIC RIM, anyone?) rather than feed more money into The Asylum. SHARKNADO can get fifty sequels and I will check them out as long as they air on TV. I would probably not even fork over a dollar at a Redbox to see this.
