Like many of you, I came of age when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise was at its peak in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and boy oh boy, did I love it. The cartoon, the toys, the theme song, and of course, the first live-action feature-film; It was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles heaven for young Kevin. Over the years, the franchise has spawned more TV shows and movies, most recently a pair of Michael Bay produced reboots, but we're on the cusp of yet another franchise reboot.
Earlier this year, it was announced that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg would be producing a CG animated TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES reboot which will be directed by Jeff Lowe with a script from Brendan O'Brien. Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins has described the project as a "next-level reinvention of the property," and in an interview with Collider, Seth Rogen teased that the reboot will be embracing the teenage aspect of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
As a lifelong fan of Ninja Turtles, weirdly the ‘Teenage’ part of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was always the part that stuck out to me the most. And as someone who loves teenage movies, and who’s made a lot of teenage movies, and who literally got their start in their entire profession by writing a teenage movie, the idea of kind of honing in on that element was really exciting to us. I mean, not disregarding the rest, but really using that as kind of a jumping off point for the film.
I'm certainly down for another reinvention of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and although my enthusiasm for the franchise isn't nearly the same as it was when I was young, there's a part of me that will always love the Turtles. My extremely worn VHS copy of the first film can attest to that. As for Seth Rogen, he'll soon be seen playing dual roles in AN AMERICAN PICKLE, which is slated to debut on HBO Max on August 6th.
